At this time of year, as the sun is descending to the lowest reaches of its daily track across the sky, and as our calendar prepares to flip from one year to the next, the earth is readying itself for regeneration. Underneath blankets of snow, plants and animals settle down to a season without food and warm weather activities, and nestle in to sleep and rest. In Nature, except for external storms and winds, the landscape below the surface becomes quiet and begins the process of regeneration. Even humans feel the urge to cuddle in, stay warm, and rest as nature crosses through the time of longest nights and shortest days. Later, as days lengthen and the sun warms and climbs, cleansed waters trickle and the ground softens, the hard work of winter – regeneration – will become apparent. Brilliant rebirth will unfold, and the freshness of spring will bounce forth in vivid joyous colors and sounds of life.

We, too, can participate in our own rebirth. Most of us don't allow seasonal changes to alter the amount of energy we expend. By not doing so, we often rarely give the body a special time to rest. Rest is extremely important for regeneration – without rest it is almost impossible for the body to regenerate itself. A period of rest allows the body to use its energy for cleansing, repairing and new growth. The digestive tract, organs, blood, cells – everything down to the smallest particle needs a occasional rest.

The most effective method for allowing a total rest for the entire body, external and internal, and to achieve the best regeneration possible, is to allow yourself to fast for a week on fresh organic juices, herbal teas and vegetable broths. Fasting during the winter season may sound extreme – after all, the holidays are here and this is the time for eating rich and delicious foods for energy and comfort during occasions of celebration and merriment. Who would want to miss out on that? Yet, much of the world in Nature is asleep and fasting during its annual winter process of regeneration.

Fortunately, humans don't need to fast and sleep for 4 months in order to facilitate regeneration. Fasting for just a week can provide huge rewards in refreshing the entire body at every level. The massive amounts of energy our body would have used for digestion and physical activities is used instead for clean-up, restoration of damaged tissues in organs and muscles, and regeneration of new cells throughout our entire body.

Regeneration through fasting is often exhibited in younger looking facial skin, brighter eyes, clearer vision, increased energy, sharper mental capacity, improved digestion, quicker muscle response, and other noticeable benefits. One of the most sublime benefits is the feeling of spiritual rebirth often attained. Feelings of elation, joy, greater depth for love, understanding and forgiveness are all available to us through the amazingly simple and natural process of regeneration. Winter is truly a wonderful season for renewal.
